The Babylonians celebrated a day for fathers around 4,000 years ago. They held feasts to honour the god El, who was considered the father of the gods…. The first known Father’s Day was celebrated in 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia, at a church service honouring the fathers who had died in a mining accident. However, Father’s Day as a national holiday is largely credited to Sonora Smart Dodd. Inspired by Mother’s Day, she wanted to honour her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran who raised her and her five siblings alone. In 1910, she campaigned for the first official Father’s Day celebration, which was held in Spokane, Washington, on June 19. The idea gained popularity, and in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the observance but did not officially declare it a national holiday. It wasn't until 1972 that President Richard Nixon signed Father’s Day into law as a permanent national holiday, celebrated on the third Sunday of June… In Australia, the first Sunday of September is chosen, which coincides with the beginning of Spring—a season often associated with rebirth and renewal, making it apt for celebrating fathers.
